Principle and Applications of the 12-Stage Hydrocyclone

Post on 2026-10-12

A hydrocyclone is a high-efficiency separation device that relies on centrifugal force to achieve solid-liquid or liquid-liquid separation. Thanks to its absence of moving parts, simple structure, and large processing capacity, it is widely used in mineral processing, chemical, food and other industries. In the field of starch refining, the "12-stage hydrocyclone" (multi-stage hydrocyclone station), through multi-stage series connection combined with countercurrent washing, achieves efficient washing and concentration of starch milk, and has become the core equipment for quality improvement and efficiency enhancement in modern starch plants. Starting from the structure and separation mechanism, this article systematically describes the working principle, process configuration, key parameters and typical applications of the 12-stage hydrocyclone.

I. Working Principle

1. Basic Structure and Swirling Flow

The main body of a hydrocyclone consists of an upper cylindrical section and a lower conical section: a tangential feed inlet and a central overflow pipe (vortex finder) are located at the top, and the underflow outlet is at the bottom of the cone. Under pump pressure, the feed enters the cylindrical section at high speed along the tangential direction, forming a spiral downward outer vortex. As the cross-section of the cone gradually contracts, a low-pressure zone forms at the center of the flow field, and part of the fluid turns into an upward-rotating inner vortex, which is finally discharged through the overflow pipe.

2. Centrifugal Separation Mechanism

Within the swirling flow field, particles are simultaneously subjected to centrifugal force, inward buoyancy and fluid drag. Taking starch milk as an example: the density of starch granules is significantly higher than that of the water phase. In a centrifugal force field equivalent to several hundred times the gravitational acceleration, the heavy-phase particles are rapidly thrown toward the wall, travel spirally downward along the cone wall, and are discharged through the underflow outlet (producing concentrated starch milk). The less dense proteins, soluble impurities and water remain in the central low-pressure zone and are discharged with the inner vortex through the overflow outlet (producing protein water).

In essence, the hydrocyclone completes classification/separation based on the differences in density and particle size among the components of the feed, and the strong centrifugal field formed by the high-speed swirling flow greatly intensifies this process, enabling even fine particles to be separated quickly and continuously.

3. Characteristics of the Separation Process

• No moving parts at all; separation relies entirely on the kinetic energy of the fluid itself, resulting in a low failure rate;

• Large processing capacity, small footprint, and suitability for continuous production;

• Separation performance is significantly affected by feed pressure, concentration, viscosity and particle size distribution, so a stable feed must be maintained.

II. Process Principle of the 12-Stage Hydrocyclone Station

1. Advantages of Multi-Stage Series Connection

A single hydrocyclone has limited separation accuracy in one pass; washing is incomplete and cannot meet the requirements of high-purity starch. Only by connecting multiple hydrocyclones in series in stages and washing step by step can deep washing be achieved within limited equipment — this is exactly the significance of "12 stages."

2. Countercurrent Washing Process

The core of the 12-stage hydrocyclone station is multi-stage series connection plus countercurrent washing:
• Starch milk enters the system from Stage 1 and advances stage by stage downstream;
• Fresh washing water is added at the last stage and "flows back" stage by stage upstream;
• The underflow of each stage (concentrated starch milk) enters the next stage for further washing and purification;
• The overflow of each stage (protein water) is returned to the feed end of the previous stage as the washing medium for that stage.

As a result, the starch and the water move in opposite directions: the starch milk becomes increasingly "cleaner" and more concentrated, while the washing water becomes increasingly "dirtier" and richer in protein. A clear concentration gradient is established within the system, achieving the highest washing efficiency with the minimum amount of water. Ultimately, the last stage outputs refined starch milk of high purity and high concentration, while the overflow of the first stage discharges most of the soluble proteins and impurities in a concentrated manner.

3. System Composition

A complete 12-stage hydrocyclone station usually consists of:
• Multiple hydrocyclones organized by stage (several units can be operated in parallel per stage to ensure processing capacity);
• Feed pumps and pressure stabilization devices;
• Concentration, pressure and flow detection with an automatic control system;
• Auxiliary piping, valves and supporting structures.

III. Main Applications

1. Starch and Starch Sugar Industry (Primary Application)

• Potato, sweet potato and cassava starch: washing and concentration of starch milk, removal of proteins and soluble impurities;

• Corn and wheat starch refining: A/B starch separation and starch milk purification;

• Starch sugar and modified starch: pre-treatment and purification of starch milk in the upstream of production.

2. Other Industries

• Mineral processing: classification, desliming and thickening of minerals;

• Chemical, food and pharmaceutical industries: solid-liquid separation and clarification of suspensions containing solids.
